UC San Diego is a large campus with a reputation for being academically rigorous but socially disconnected. Many students struggle to find a sense of belonging, leading to isolation, lack of engagement, and missed opportunities. Our redesign of the UCSD app aims to address this by creating a centralized digital space for students to connect, discover events, and build a stronger community.
The current UCSD app, while functional, is slow, buggy, and lacks social features that would enable students to connect with one another. Without a central hub for discovering events, joining communities, or even connecting with peers, many students struggle to find a sense of belonging on campus. This leads to feelings of isolation, missed opportunities, and a campus culture that feels disconnected and impersonal.
Our redesign, aims to transform the UCSD app from a static resource tool into a central hub for student interaction. Features like The Forum enable students to join discussions and communities, while a personalized event catalog helps them discover activities that match their interests. A streamlined UI and easy access to campus resources make navigating the app simple and efficient.
By providing a more intuitive and engaging platform, we’ve created a space that fosters connection, reduces isolation, and makes it easier for students to stay involved in campus activities. Students can now easily find opportunities, join discussions, and feel more connected to their university, ultimately enhancing both their social and academic experiences.

We crafted intuitive user flows to guide users seamlessly through tasks like checking expiration dates, managing groceries, and receiving meal recommendations. Each flow was tested and refined based on user feedback.
Initial sketches explored visual styles and layouts for the app, aiming for a clean, intuitive design that minimized cognitive load.
Wireframes were created in Figma to lay out the main app screens, focusing on functionality and navigation. These wireframes helped in user testing, where feedback guided further refinement.
The final visual design emphasized an approachable, easy-to-navigate interface, using colors and icons that aligned with the app’s mission of simplicity and sustainability.
